Update on SIN identifiers
The use of a plan member’s social insurance number (SIN) as their account number or plan member ID is being discontinued.
Throughout 2026 and 2027, Group Retirement Services (GRS) will work with your Clients to update these numbers to remove SIN identifiers. This change aligns with Sun Life’s commitment to protecting personal information and recommendations from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
We’ll send plan sponsors a GR News on April 9, 2026, about this change.
